Map Your Own Data with InstantAtlas Community

After you have mapped your own data please complete a short survey to help us improve this trial version  - see link below

This mapping facility is provided with the support of GeoWise, developers of the InstantAtlas software used by PHIDU.

You can map data for three geographies in Australia:

i)    Postcodes*

ii)   Statistical Local Areas** (SLAs)

iii)  Local Government Areas** (LGAs)

*The boundary files for mapping postcode data are those supplied by the ABS (Australia Bureau of Statistics).  They are called postal area boundaries and approximate postcode boundaries; a postal area is created by allocating whole Collection Districts to Australia Post postcodes.

**SLA and LGA data must be on boundaries as at 1 July 2006 (ABS ASGC)

Steps to Map Your Own Data Click here to download these instructions as a MS Word doc

If you are a registered user click here to log in

If not, click here to register

 i)

Click on one of the three geography tabs – Postcode, SLA, LGA.

 ii)

 Click on 'Australian Health'.

 iii)

 To commence loading your data:

  - click on 'Show Map Controls & Upload My Data' button at top left of screen

  - choose either 'Standard' (single map - your map) or 'Double' (two maps, your map and a map of a PHIDU indicator to compare with your data).

 iv)

Give your data a name in the box provided (the default name is 'My Data').

 v)

Click on the link ‘Download the codes for this geo-type here’ and follow the instructions in the csv file that you open to add your data (e.g., type or paste it in against the area codes).  Here is an example data file that can be used to trial the Statistical Local Areas map. This will allow you to map the percentage of the population aged 15 to 19 years who were studying or working at the 2006 Census.

 Note:

You must match your areas (e.g., postcodes) with those in the csv file.

Remove any areas in your list that are not in the csv file (advise us if you think there is a problem with the csv list).

Leave blank any areas in the csv that are not in your data.

Make sure you copy from the ‘ID’ cell as instructed, not from the ‘NAME’ cell.

vi)

After pasting the data into the box:

 - click on the ‘Upload’ button.

Note: This last step may take some time, with the ‘Loading attribute data’ message staying on 0% - but it will then jump quickly to 100.

vii)

To save your data click 'Save this Data View' and choose to share 'with No-one' or 'with Everyone', then click 'Save'. This view will now be accessible to you through the 'My Data Views' tab.

viii)

Once you have selected your data from the 'My Data Views' tab, click on the ‘Select data’ button and select your data from the drop down list to populate the map (in the Double map template, repeat this in the second map  to compare with an indicator from the PHIDU set. Note: at the postcode level data are available for age groups and the ABS Index of Relative Socio-economic Disadvantage).

ix)

Click the right mouse button for options to print or export your map (including enlarging it), or read the help files by clicking on the 'Help' button on the right hand side next to the map for further information on the features of InstantAtlas mapping software.
